Direct Detection of WIMPs

چکیده
In the next chapters we are going to give an overview of the main WIMP search strategies, which fall in three big categories: • Direct searches probe the scattering cross section of WIMPs with nuclei, by looking for nuclear recoils in some target material in a low background environment. When a WIMP of the galactic halo passes through the target, it may scatter off a nucleus, whose recoil will be measured by suitable detectors. The main astrophysical uncertainty is due to the DM density in the Solar System and to its velocity distribution. • Indirect searches look for the products of WIMP annihilations in a number of astrophysical objects, including the galaxy and his satellites, other galaxies and galaxy clusters, as well as the Sun and the Earth. • In LHC searches, DM particles (and generically the “dark sector”) are studied by producing them in proton collisions, in association with other SM particles (being very weakly interacting, WIMPs would otherwise be invisible at colliders, and their typical signature is missing energy in the transverse plane).

How Precisely Could We Identify Wimps Model–independently with Direct Dark Matter Detection Experiments
In this talk we present data analysis methods for reconstructing the mass and couplings of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) by using directly future experimental data (i.e., measured recoil energies) from direct Dark Matter detection. These methods are independent of the model of Galactic halo as well as of WIMPs. The basic ideas of these methods and the feasibility and uncertaintie...
متن کاملOn the Direct Detection of Extragalactic WIMPs
We consider the direct detection of WIMPs reaching the Earth from outside the Milky Way. If these WIMPs form a distinct population they will, although of much lower flux than typical galactic halo WIMPs, have a number of features which might aid in their ultimate detectability: a high and essentially unique velocity (∼ 600 km/s in the galactic rest frame) due to their acceleration in entering t...
متن کاملDirect Searches for Dark Matter Particles: Wimps and Axions
WIMPs and axions are the two best motivated candidates to compose the Dark Matter of the Universe. An important number of experimental groups are developing and using different techniques for their direct detection. An updated review of current searches is done, emphasizing latest results.
متن کاملDynamics of WIMPs in the Solar System and Implications for Direct and Indirect Detection
Semi-analytic treatments of the evolution of orbits of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) in the solar system suggest that the WIMPs bound to the solar system may enhance the direct detection rate relative to that of the unbound population by up to a factor of order unity, and boost the flux of neutrinos from WIMP annihilation in the Earth by up to two orders of magnitude. To test the...
متن کاملDetermining the WIMP mass from a single direct detection experiment
The energy spectrum of nuclear recoils in Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) direct detection experiments depends on the underlying WIMP mass (strongly for light WIMPs, weakly for heavy WIMPs). We discuss how the accuracy with which the WIMP mass could be determined by a single direct detection experiment depends on the detector configuration and the WIMP properties. In particular we ex...
